The law firm now known as BurnettDriskill, Attorneys was formed in 1991 by two “Rogers” – Roger G. Burnett and Roger M. Driskill. Mr. Burnett grew up in a farming family. In 1957, while sitting on a tractor on a particularly hot day, he said to himself, “I don’t want to do this for the rest of my life.” At that point, Mr. Burnett was already married and raising four children, but he went back to school and obtained his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Mr. Driskill grew up in Richmond, Missouri. He is not embarrassed to admit that he first thought about becoming an attorney when he was a child, watching episodes of Perry Mason. Following high school, he left the Kansas City area to attend college at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri, with his goal of becoming an attorney still intact. That goal was achieved in 1974, when he received his law degree from the University of Missouri School of Law in Columbia.
Following law school, Mr. Driskill returned to his hometown, where he established a general practice. During the course of their respective careers, the paths of Mr. Driskill and Mr. Burnett, who had established his own practice in Clay County, Missouri, eventually crossed. In 1991, they decided to join forces to form what was then called “Burnett & Driskill” with an office in Liberty, Missouri.
The firm’s practice was devoted to a general practice that involved substantial litigation. However, in 1993, after returning from a legal seminar that year, Mr. Burnett reported to Mr. Driskill that “the days of a general practice are ending.” The two partners then decided to focus Burnett & Driskill’s practice on disability law. Both of them felt that the most rewarding part of practicing law was helping those who, through no fault of their own, were unable to help themselves.
At considerable financial and personal expense, Burnett & Driskill concluded their general practice and focused exclusively on helping people with disabilities. The practice began with helping people with Social Security Disability claims, and later expanded to other areas, such as:
